From Vienna

Nearly time to depart Vienna just as we were getting the hang of the underground. Its ok to get lost driving the car cos you get to see sights you would otherwise miss but on the underground all you can do is retrace your trip. Still, I find it fun and the trains run every 4 or 5 minutes so not much time is lost. And no-one can tell we are lost because people keep asking us for directions.




Our trip started with leaving london is drizzle and 10 degrees and arrived in Vienna with clear skies and 27. That was nice but since it has been 31 - 33 and humid, complete with afternoon thunderstorm. Might as well be in Townsville. Except you dont see these in the shops at Stockland (these are in the shops over the old from our hotel).

We have done th requisite touristy things including a lot of walking. I got one thing out of my system. We watched The Third Man on my iTouch the night we arrived and rode the ferris wheel the next day. I was leased to see there was no easy way to open the door when "in flight" as Harry Lime was able to do. We shared the carriage with some swiss soccer fans.

Its Euro 2008. Last night Spain had a surprise win over Italy. Both sides must have been shocked as we had a much quieter night than the first when there were noisy drunken fans to all hours. but they do brighten the streets as they roam filling in their day waiting for the game.

Part of todays sightseeing was to the Natural History Museum. Well worth a visit. Its about the cheapest entry anywhere, in a lovely old building which matches any of the musical venues and the exhibits are endearingly old fashioned. All that was missing was the array of butterflies in a picture pattern.

Soon the long trip back to Oz where we gather we will be welcomed by Qantas staff on strike.
