Volgograd

Last night was through Russian Immigration. Each carriage had a different story.
Some were not disturbed and their papers were untouched but were handed their passport all stamped the next morning.
Some had no recollection of any check although had had one for sure (eg Margaret).
My experience was of the carriage attendant knocking on the door at 1 am to hand me our passports (they have been held by the tour guides). Finally at 3.45 am another knock and a 6 foot 3 inch immigration cum army chappie saying 'Passports please'.
Only too happy to oblige I handed them over and he checked them then took them. Pleased to say they were back in our cabin later in the morning.

The Kazakh desert finally have way to some growth and the style of house changes abruptly.

No drunk drivers are going to go past these obstacles. Check the flap things !!

Stalls on a station.

Not only trees but autumn colours, which we dont get to see in Townsville.

Volgograd apartments. The sheds in the foreground are storage sheds, usually for a car as far as we could make out. They all had vents so were presumably habitable to some degree and allowed the residents to escape the high rise for a bit.

Day out in Volgrad (in the War Museum).

I wondered why the tour of Volgograd concentrated on the 280 day seige of WW II until I saw the post war photos. It has several sister cities incuding Coventry and Hiroshima so that might give you a clue.

This ruin of a mill was left as a memorial next to the museum.

First visit was to the 85 m/280 foot high Motherland Monument. Nothing done by halves here. It could be seen from pretty well anywhere.

The Volga River from the statue.

The Eternal Flame with guard. The tour timing coincided with changing of the guard with the guards goose stepping up the ramp. It was sobering to watch them and the unnecessary hard walk in marching that way - up a slope.

Volgograd was a brief stopover and before we had a chance to have a browse of the outside area it was back to the bus and train and onward to Moscow. They dont make railway stations like this in Townsville.
