St Petersburg Six

It is the last day of the big trip. We are up at 7 am for 9 am tour to St Isaacs Cathedral, knowing that the next time we come to roost for any time will be in Townsville about 11.30 Tuesday morning. Make you feel tired?

So here is the cathredal. In the St Petersbug gloom the columns are not very impressive, but each is made from a single block of red granite.




Inside there is standing room for 14,000 people. So they say anyway. It certainly was vast.

At the apex of the dome the dove is seen through a defect . At the time it was used as a museum in the era of the communists, a pendulum hung from here and was used to show how it moved with earth's rotation.

The colour scheme may leave a bit to be desired but its hard not to be impressed with the columns made from malachite and lapis lazuli.
